Do not ask “can I do anything?”; offer something concrete: bring a meal, fetch chairs, look after the children, do the groceries.
Come by on the visiting evenings, even if only briefly. Presence counts more than words.
Stay in touch after the ocho dia too. That is often when the house goes quiet.
Traditions differ from family to family, church to church and neighbourhood to neighbourhood. So we prefer to write “in many families it goes like this” rather than “this is how it should be”.
